Abstract:

This workshop will provide an overview of how the proliferation of information communication technologies (ICTs) supports the development of a flexible, adaptive and international white extremist community. Using the 2019 terrorist attack against  mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand as a case study, it will explore how the ‘network society’ as outlined by Manuel Castells supports the development of this international network. The final portion of the workshop will discuss international attempts to regulate such content, and the challenges governments face in trying to limit the spread of extremism and extremist content.
