"The Ghosts of Extinction” (Prof. Dolly Jørgensen)

In the halls of natural history museums all over the world, you peer through the glass and come face-to-face with ghosts. These are real ghosts—presences that haunt us. Behind museum glass, the extinct dead are not just remembered; they live on as other presences. In this Green Hour talk, I present the thinking behind my forthcoming book Ghosts Behind Glass (University of Chicago Press, 2025), which re-presents extinct animals through the stories told about them and their remains. This re-presenting (by which I mean helping something to be present again through their life history and body) allows the extinct in this book, these ghosts, to speak their own stories.

“Petrified: Living During a Rupture of Life on Earth” (Dr. Joshua Wodak)

A rupture of life on Earth is currently unfolding. What, then, does this rupture signify, not only in terms of being alive during such an upheaval, but also in terms of being alive to upheaval itself? Lyrical, playful, and deadly serious, Petrified: Living During a Rupture of Life on Earth takes the reader on a journey deep into the nature of our home, to give us the tools to learn how, in the middle of that rupture, to comport ourselves with honesty, clarity, culpability and intelligence. This talk will provide an overview of the book, following its March 2025 publication by De Gruyter.

“Wie schmeckt die Zukunft? Über das Ausstellen ökologischer Debatten im Museum” (Dr. Isabel Greschat)

Das Museum Brot und Kunst – Forum Welternährung in Ulm beschäftigt sich mit Brot, Nahrung und Welternährung. Es knüpft an einer alltäglichen Erfahrung an – Brot zu machen und zu essen – fragt nach den Transformationen durch die industrielle Revolution und begibt sich schließlich mitten in die Diskussionen um Gentechnik, Monokulturen, Welthandel uvm. Kunst ist, verwoben mit diesen Themen, ein wichtiger Bestandteil des 2019 neu eröffneten Hauses. Im Vortrag wird das Museum und seine Konzeption vorgestellt. Außerdem beschäftigen wir uns mit der Frage: Wie können wir Menschen für ökologische und Zukunftsthemen interessieren? Welche Rolle können Museen in der Nachhaltigkeitsdebatte einnehmen?
