“The piglet dedicants from the votive deposit of Piazza San Francesco in Catania. A story about terracottas production in Greek Sicily (5th-4th c. BC)“

am Dienstag, 18. Mai 2021.

Im Rahmen des Kolloquiums Klassische Archäologie berichtet Flavio Ferlito M.A. (Università Catania) über die Ferkel-Opfergebenden des Votivdepots von Piazza San Francesco in Catania, vor dem Hintergrund der Terrakotten Produktion im Griechischen Sizilien im 5.-4. Jh. v. Chr.

Abstract:
In the city of Catania, located in the eastern part of Sicily, at the foot of Mount Etna, the votive deposit of Piazza San Francesco was found in 1959, by Prof. Giovanni Rizza, following urban works carried out for the sewer duct.
Due to the collection of about 1200 boxes of materials, the deposit appears to be one of the most consistent and important votive context in the Mediterranean. Based on the archaeological materials, the sanctuary related to the deposit must have had two important phases. The first one dates back to the Archaic period, and the second one from 470 BC. ca. until the end of Late Classical period.
Among the materials of the second phase, a substantial number of clay statuettes (3000 fragments ca.) stands out. In particular, the most outstanding were the piglet dedicants thanks to which it was possible to link the sanctuary to the cult of Demeter and Kore.
The project is mainly focused on the votive statuettes’ production. The methodology applied consists of 3 main points: the recomposition of the coroplastic production, the analysis of the diffusion of the terracotta offerers in Sicily and the analysis of the problem related to the ideological, cultual and social aspects.
