Excavation in the Iron Age village of Bostel

© Stempa Project

The excavations in the Iron Age village of Bostel (municipality of Rotzo, northern Italy) resume in 2022 as a joint effort of the University of Sassari and the University of Augsburg, with the participation of students from multiple Italian and international universities. The site is one of the most important villages of the Magré culture, characterized by hybrid influences coming from the alpine world (Räter) and the Po plain (ancient Veneti). The main occupation phase starts from the late 6th - early 5th century BC and arrives up to the romanization of the area, around the 2nd century BC.

During the 3 to 6 weeks campaign (August 29th to October 8th 2022), you will become familiar with the methods, techniques, and instruments of stratigraphic excavation, including drafting layer sheets (according to the Italian ICCD guidelines), using the Munsell soil color charts & and the soil texture triangle, drawing plans and sections, taking archaeological photographs. Moreover, you will learn how to record and eventually process aerial drone imagery for producing 3D models and orthophotoplans, how to acquire topographic data via total station, how to wash and preliminarily catalogue local material finds. Finally, you will participate to the communication and dissemination activities.
