FAPESP/BAYLAT Workshops
The ISLA Institute and its URC Working Group have been awarded, together with their institutional Brazilian partners, FAPESP/BAYLAT funding for joint workshops etc. in São Paulo and Augsburg regarding urban-cultural diversity matters and multilingualism.
Kolumbianische HORIZONTES
Am 13. Dezember 2023 findet um 19 Uhr eine HORIZONTES-Filmvorführung (inkl. Publikumsdiskussion) des kolumbianischen Dokumentarfilms "Strangers to Peace" (2022) im Augsburger Liliom Kino statt, bei der auch die Produzentin des prämierten Films, Colleen Alena O'Brien, vor Ort sein wird. Die von Juan Botía Mena moderierte Veranstaltung wird mit Mitteln des Deutschen Hispanistenverbandes (DHV) gefördert und setzt den filmwissenschaftlichen ISLA-Dialog von iberoromanischen Kulturstudien und Stadtgesellschaft aktiv fort.

The Urban Cultures Working Group organizes from 27th until 30th of September 2023 together with der University of El Salvador (USAL) in Buenos Aires a transatlantic LAB dedicated to Urban Cultural Sustainability Issues where scientists (CONICET, ISLA, et al.), artists, activists, NGOs, and politicians (Buenos Aires Minister of Creativity and Culture & Augsburg City Councilor of Culture, World Heritage, and Sports) will discuss actual challenges along with students from Augsburg (i.a., MA Ibero-Romance Cultural Studies) and Buenos Aires (Degree & PhD). The UC LAB is co-funded by the EU and promotes the major European-Latin American Urban Cultural Studies field at University of Augsburg.
DLV Chairmanship
ISLA Co-Director Joachim Steffen has been elected Chairman of the Board (2023-2025) of the German Association of Lusitanists (DLV) at their last Conference in Zwickau (Sep-23). Together with the diverse ISLA Activities over the last 30 years (including the organization of the 2019 transcontinental Lusitanist’s Conference in Augsburg), Prof. Steffen’s DLV Chairmanship underscores the persistent Lusophone commitment at the University of Augsburg in Research and Studies (vid., e.g., the new Ibero-Romance Cultural Studies [IRK] master program where Portuguese is equal study language with Spanish). The ISLA congratulates Prof. Steffen and wishes him tudo de bom for his chairmanship!
Chilenische HORIZONTES
Am 11. September 2023 findet um 19 Uhr in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Liliom Kino in Augsburg eine HORIZONTES-Filmvorführung des Dokumentarfilms "Mi país imaginario" (2022) des chilenischen Filmemachers Patricio Guzmán statt, dessen anschließende Publikumsdiskussion von Juan Botía Mena moderiert wird. Folgeveranstaltungen finden dann am 13. September 2023 im Passauer Zentrum für ambulante Kultur und Kommunikation/ZaKK sowie am 14. September 2023 im Münchener Amerikahaus statt.

In der Kalenderwoche 30 ist die kanadische Kulturwissenschaftlerin und Mitglied des European Expert Network on Culture (EENC) Nancy Duxbury, PhD, vom Centre for Social Studies der Universität Coimbra zu Gast am ISLA, um u. a. am 26. Juli einen forschungsorientierenden Transfer-Workshop zu Cultural Mapping und Fragen von Diversität und Interdisziplinarität im Zeichen von Internationalisierung im Rahmen des Augsburger IRK-Masterstudiengangs anzubieten.

Am 13. Juli 2023 trägt der galicische Geograph und Stadtforscher Prof. Dr. Rubén Lois von der Universidade de Santiago de Compostela im Rahmen des Pilgertexte-Seminars von Lena Ringen in D1005 um 8.15 Uhr zum Thema "La reinvención contemporánea del Camino de Santiago: historias, narrativas y territorio" vor. Lois ist in der Kalenderwoche 28 zu Gast am ISLA und u. a. Mitglied der internationalen Urban Cultures-Arbeitsgruppe sowie Vizepräsident der International Geographical Union (IGU).
Mexikanische PONTES-Lecture
Am 4. Juli 2023 trägt um 17.30 Uhr die mexikanische Philologin Prof. Dr. Martha Lilia Tenorio vom Colegio de México (COLMEX) zu „Ecos de mi pluma: An invitation to Sor Juana's poetry" vor. Die englischsprachige PONTES-Lecture findet in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Augsburger ISLA anlässlich des Master-Studienstarts der Ibero-Romanischen Kulturstudien (IRK) statt. PONTES Co-Lecture on Indigenous letters in Guaraní
On June 5, 2023, at 17h30 in Room D 2005, Professor Shawn Austin (U Arkansas) & Dr. Leonardo Cerno (UNaM, Misiones) will talk about "Indigenous letters in Guarani defending Life and Territory in the Colonial Rio de la Plata (1752-1753)." Context: In 1750 Spain and Portugal exchanged territories in their global colonial possessions in accordance with the Treaty of Madrid. In South America, vast and rich territories inhabited by Guarani Christians and Jesuit missionaries were to be given to the Portuguese. Before taking up arms against Spanish and Portuguese armies, the Guarani raised their voices in eight letters directed to royal authorities, showing their particular view of this situation and leaving an important ethnic and linguistic legacy. The goal of this talk is to describe how these documents originated, the arguments they made, and their distinctive rhetorical modes.
Ibero-Romance Cultural Studies (MA) at University of Augsburg
Interconnected with the ISLA Institute of Iberian and Latin American Studies, the research-oriented Master of Arts (MA) “Ibero-Romance Cultural Studies” (IRK) addresses students interested in (inter)cultural topics related to the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America from a comparative an transnational viewpoint. Besides Spanish and Portuguese language Socio-Cultures and Media, the transatlantic relations between Europe, the Americas and Africa are studied from a historic as well actual perspective, including (post)colonial and (trans)areal aspects. Urban Cultures of Participation
Vom 19. bis 20. Januar 2023 findet in Augsburg eine internationale Tagung zu "Urban Cultures of Participation" statt, die den vielschichtigen Dimensionen und Dynamiken städtischer Teilhabe und soziokultureller Mitgestaltung gewidmet ist und deren Keynote der bekannte britische Urbanist Charles Landry am 19. Januar um 18 Uhr in Hörsaal H 1001 halten wird. Tags darauf wird dann am 20. Januar im Tagungszentrum Sankt Ulrich in drei transdisziplinären Panels Fragen kreativer, inklusiver wie ökologischer Partizipation nachgegangen, ehe die Ergebnisse im Rahmen einer abschließenden Fishbowl-Diskussion ab 16 Uhr präsentiert und diskutiert werden. Die Tagung wird von der Augsburger Arbeitsgruppe "Urban Cultures" (UC) organisiert und mit Mitteln der Europäischen Kommission gefördert. Interessierte an der Keynote und/oder Abschlussdiskussion werden aus Kapazitätsgründen gebeten, sich über lena.ringen@philhist.uni-augsburg.de dafür anzumelden.
