Subsidies for Open Access

Starting July 1, 2025, the University of Augsburg has established a new publication fund for the promotion of young researchers and the advancement of women. Applications for subsidies can be submitted for hybrid Open Access articles and Open Access habilitation monographs.
Options for publishing Open Access
The university supports Open Access publishing and has established a publication fund for research assistants, academic lecturers, and junior professors with new funding programmes effective July 1, 2025.
1. If you would like to publish an article in hybrid Open Access, please first complete our online application form for hybrid Open Access. Based on your form, the University Library will be happy to check whether you are eligible for free publication through our DEAL- or transformative agreements or whether you can apply for subsidies from the University of Augsburg's young researchers and advancement of women funds.
2. If you would like to publish your habilitation monograph in Open Access, please complete our Application form for subsidies for an Open Access habilitation monograph.
Criteria for subsidy applications for an article in hybrid Open Access
- The author is the corresponding author of the publication.
- The author is a research associate, academic lecturer, or junior professor at the University of Augsburg.
- If the author is a female research assistant, academic lecturer, or junior professor at the University of Augsburg, funding for the advancement of women can be awarded in addition to the funding for young researchers.
- The article has been accepted for publication by the journal.
- The journal operates with optional Open Access ("hybrid"). Articles in pure Open Access journals ("fully gold") are not eligible for funding.
- The article will be published under a Creative Commons licence (e.g. CC-BY) or an equivalent licence that permits reuse.
- No other Open Access publication funding is available.
- Only Open Access fees (article processing charges) are eligible. Other costs such as color charges, page charges, submission charges, licensing, archiving, and other administrative fees are NOT eligible.
- Publications without research content and publications in so-called mirror journals are also not eligible for funding.
- The following notice must appear in the publication:
Die Open-Access-Veröffentlichung dieses Artikels wurde unterstützt durch den Publikationsfonds der Universität Augsburg. (The open access publication of this article was supported by the publication fund of the University of Augsburg.) - The article will be made publicly available and archived long-term on the University Library's publication server.
Criteria for subsidy applications for a habilitation monograph in Open Access
- The author is the corresponding and only author of the publication.
- The author is a research associate, academic lecturer, or junior professor at the University of Augsburg.
- If the author is a female research assistant, academic lecturer, or junior professor at the University of Augsburg, funding for the advancement of women can be awarded in addition to the funding for young researchers.
- A detailed publisher quote is available.
- The habilitation monograph will be published under a Creative Commons licence (e.g. CC-BY) or an equivalent licence that permits reuse.
- No other Open Access publication funding is available.
- Only Open Access fees (book processing charges) are eligible. Other costs such as printing costs, color charges, page charges, licensing, archiving, and other administrative fees are NOT eligible.
- The following notice must appear in the publication:
Die Open-Access-Veröffentlichung dieses Artikels wurde unterstützt durch den Publikationsfonds der Universität Augsburg. (The open access publication of this article was supported by the publication fund of the University of Augsburg.) - The habilitation monograph will be made publicly available and archived long-term on the University Library's publication server.
- The subsidies approval for the Open Access publication of a habilitation monograph is limited to 12 months. If an extension is required, please contact the University Library before the end of that period.
Application process for subsidies
Articles in hybrid Open Access
Applications will be processed in order of receipt. Once the article has been accepted and BEFORE the publisher issues an invoice:
- Please complete our online application form for hybrid Open Access.
- Additionally, please complete the Application form for subsidies for an article in hybrid Open Access and send this with a digital signature or scanned with an analogue signature to openaccess@bibliothek.uni-augsburg.de.
- The portion of the invoice that exceeds the amount covered by the University of Augsburg's publication fund will be transferred by the University Library from the University's internal cost centre(s) specified in the application. Therefore, the signature of the cost centre owner is required to complete this process.
- The University Library will swiftly inform you of the approved subsidies and the subsidy amount. Please note the important information for invoicing (billing address, subsidy reference, VAT ID, etc.).
- The corresponding author requests an invoice from the publisher based on the details specified by the University Library under point 3.
- The publisher sends the invoice directly to the University Library.
- The invoice is checked and paid by the University Library and the subsidies plus any remainder amounts are then transferred out of the relevant cost centres within the University.
- Please complete the Application form for subsidies for an Open Access habilitation monograph and send it with a digital signature or scanned with an analogue signature together with a detailed publisher quote (incl. a breakdown of the Open Access portion) to openaccess@bibliothek.uni-augsburg.de.
- To ensure that this is a habilitation monograph from the University of Augsburg, the signature of the supervisor is required.
- The portion of the invoice that exceeds the amount covered by the University of Augsburg's publication fund will be transferred by the University Library from the University's internal cost centre(s) specified in the application. Therefore, the signature of the cost centre owner is required to complete this process.
- The University Library will swiftly inform you of the approved subsidies and the subsidy amount. Please note the important information for invoicing (billing address, subsidy reference, VAT ID, etc.).
- The author sends the signed publishing contract to the University Library.
- The author requests an invoice from the publisher based on the details specified by the University Library under point 2.
- The publisher sends the invoice directly to the University Library.
- The invoice is checked and paid by the University Library and the subsidies plus any remainder amounts are then transferred out of the relevant cost centres within the University.
